14 Gray's Inn Square

Sponsors of Family Law Young Solicitor of the Year Award

14 Gray’s Inn Square is a progressive and expanding family law set with strength at all levels of call.

It has a well established history of providing skilled advice and advocacy in the traditional areas of Family law and the complementary areas of the Court of Protection, the Inheritance Act, TLATA, Forced Marriage and Special Educational Needs.

The fact that Chambers is smaller than some of its competitors means it is able to offer a more personalised and welcoming approach than some of the larger sets in the marketplace. Chambers appreciates the importance of offering continuity of counsel wherever possible and has earned a reputation for “going the extra mile” as a result of the emphasis placed on client care from the first point of contact with the clerks through to the conclusion of the case.

14 Gray’s Inn Square attracts high quality work from a wide ranging client base. It combines a commitment to publicly funded work with high profile private client work. Chambers prides itself on being able to offer excellence without excessive expense, irrespective of the client’s means.

Members of Chambers are dedicated to justice in the widest sense, undertaking pro bono work through the Bar Pro Bono Unit and voluntary work for various community legal projects. Chambers has links with various charitable organisations.

14 Gray’s Inn Square has historically been a breeding ground for the Family Bench. In addition to the significant number of former members who have received judicial appointments, several of Chambers’ current members sit as Tribunal Chairs and Deputy Judges.

Coram Chambers

Sponsor of Cornwell Award for Outstanding Contribution to Family Law

Coram offers a specialist service in 3 areas of work: family law, notably child protection, private law children, adoption, international movement of children, domestic violence and forced marriage injunctions, cohabitation and financial remedies; specific areas of civil law, including judicial review, human rights, adult care, care standards, local authority and health services; and mediation and collaborative law services.

The set: Chambers was formed in 1999 by the merger of two specialist family and civil teams. From the beginning the set specialised in family law and complementary civil areas, particularly judicial review and public law. Chambers was an immediate success and has rapidly expanded by internal growth, recruitment from other quality sets, and transfer from the solicitors' profession. The head of chambers is Martha Cover.

Coram is now nationally recognised as a centre of excellence in its fields of practice. Thirteen members of chambers also sit as Recorders, Deputy District Judges and Chairs of mental health and special education and disability tribunals. Roger McCarthy QC, who served as Coram's head of chambers throughout its first ten years, also sits as a Deputy Judge of the High Court.

Coram's barristers and clerks are renowned for their ability, integrity and the high level of service they offer to solicitors and lay clients. Coram also has a strong ethos of promoting the rights and interests of women, those from black and minority ethnic backgrounds, and the LGBT community, both in terms of its clients and its tenants and staff. Since Coram's formation, four women members of chambers have been appointed as Circuit Judges and one as a Master of the Queen's Bench Division.
